Asphalt shingle roof installation in California.

Asphalt shingles are the most common roof material in California for a reason — they're the best balance of cost, performance, and warranty for the average 20–30 year ownership window. Modern architectural shingles deliver wind ratings to 130 mph, Class A fire ratings, and 30-year manufacturer warranties at a third of tile's installed cost. Here's what to know before you choose them.

3-tab vs architectural vs designer shingles

Quick answer

3-tab shingles are 20–25 year, single-layer, cheapest ($4–6/sqft installed). Architectural (dimensional) shingles are 30-year, two-layer, the modern standard ($6–10/sqft). Designer / luxury shingles (slate look, shake look) are 30–50 year, multi-layer, ($10–14/sqft). For California, architectural is almost always the right choice.

We rarely install 3-tab anymore — the price gap to architectural is small enough that the longer warranty and better wind rating justify the upgrade for every customer. Designer shingles are aesthetic choices for homes where the cost gap to tile is closing but tile isn't structurally supported.

Asphalt shingle roof cost in California

A typical 2,200 sqft California home with architectural shingles: $13,000–22,000 all in. Variables: tear-off ($1–3/sqft), code upgrades (R-30 insulation, attic ventilation, ice-and-water shield), waste factor for complex roofs (hips, valleys, dormers), and gutter replacement if needed. We provide line-item estimates so you see exactly what each component costs.

Brand and warranty comparison

GAF Timberline HDZ: 30-year warranty, 130 mph wind rating, the California standard. Owens Corning Duration: 30-year warranty, lifetime algae resistance, slightly higher cost. CertainTeed Landmark: 30-year warranty, widest color range. All three are Class A fire-rated, all three are appropriate for California climate. We install all three depending on color match and lead time.

When shingles need replacement

Telltale signs: cupping or curling shingles (UV damage, end of life), granule loss visible from gutters, exposed asphalt mat or fiberglass backing, missing shingles in any slope, ridge cap deterioration, daylight visible through attic decking. California asphalt shingle roofs typically last 20–25 years; harsh sun exposure and lack of attic ventilation can cut that to 15.

QUESTIONS WE GET

About asphalt shingle roof installation.

How long does asphalt shingle roof installation take?
Most California shingle roof installations are 1–3 working days for a 2,200 sqft home. Tear-off morning of day 1, underlayment by end of day 1, shingle install through day 2, cleanup and final inspection day 3.
What's the difference between manufacturer warranty and workmanship warranty?
Manufacturer warranty covers shingle defects (typically 30 years material). Workmanship warranty covers installation defects (typically 5–10 years labor). Cali #1 Roofing offers a 10-year workmanship warranty on top of the GAF/Owens Corning/CertainTeed manufacturer warranty.
Can I just put new shingles over old shingles?
Technically yes (called an overlay) for the first re-roof in California. After that, code requires full tear-off. We recommend tear-off even for first re-roofs because overlays hide underlying problems (rotten decking, failed flashing) and add weight without addressing root causes. The cost difference is small.
Are asphalt shingles a good choice for California heat?
Yes when paired with proper attic ventilation (ridge vent + soffit vents) and a radiant barrier. Cool-roof certified shingles (reflective granules) reduce attic temperatures 10–20°F and qualify for some California utility rebates. We default to cool-roof shingles where available.
Will my insurance cover a roof replacement when shingles fail from age?
No — age-related deterioration is excluded from all California homeowner policies. Replacement after age failure is out-of-pocket. Insurance covers sudden damage events (wind, hail, debris impact) not aging.
