Designer / luxury shingles (slate look, shake look) are 30–50 year, multi-layer, ($10–14/sqft). For California, architectural is almost always the right choice.

We rarely install 3-tab anymore — the price gap to architectural is small enough that the longer warranty and better wind rating justify the upgrade for every customer. Designer shingles are aesthetic choices for homes where the cost gap to tile is closing but tile isn't structurally supported.
